Junior Christian Service ProjectSince September 1997 the Service-to-Community Project has been part of the Junior Curriculum. The purpose of this program is to prepare our students for life experiences beyond high school so that they will make a positive difference in the world. Every junior is required to perform a minimum of 36 hours during the second semester.
Writing Across the CurriculumThe Writing Across the Curriculum Program and Immaculate Conception High School involves a five step writing process that serves to enhance each student’s writing comprehension abilities. The program in first introduced in Freshman English, where basic writing process is taught. Freshmen teachers, in all subjects, are required to assign lower level writing assignments, Type I or Type II, on a weekly basis. Students work their way to self-correction and peer correction, Type III and Type IV, and are required to complete a major assignment, Type V, in all major subject areas by the end of freshmen year. This process continues for the next three years with lower level assignments being used and quiz grades and heavier emphasis placed on upper level assignments. By the time the student reaches senior year, all submitted papers should be a standard Type V format in all disciplines. All teachers are responsible to follow this program for all of their classes.
F.O.C.U.S. (Fostering Overall Comprehension and Universal Skills)The newly implemented FOCUS program involves students on all grade levels attending and enrichment class for 20 minutes each morning before regular classes begin. Depending on the student’s grade level, his/her FOCUS schedule for the year can include SAT preparation, Study Skills, World Geography, Current Events, Topics in Modern Science, Vocabulary Skills and Public Speaking.
HONORS BY CHOICE AND PERFORMANCEAny student at Immaculate Conception can opt to take on Honors Work in any given course at any given grade level. This provides students with the opportunity to put forth the extra effort in the subjects in which they excel. Honors Credit for each course successfully completed Honors By Choice class is noted on the transcript of each individual student. Students may take as many honors classes as they wish, or may opt to take on only one or two per year. This innovative and original program allows each student to achieve honors status in the areas in which he or she excels.
PEER MINISTRYThis program offers leadership training to student leaders and prepares these students to facilitate weekly groups for all freshmen students at ICHS. The goal of the freshmen groups is to aid the freshmen socially and academically in their adjustment and orientation to high school life. The Peer Minister is encouraged to see his or her role as one of ministry offering by word and example positive regard to the newest members of the Immaculate Family. This program is designed to enable those students involved to build better self-images, strengthen communication skills, strengthen leadership qualities and to learn and share new ideas concerning interpersonal dynamics and trust building.
